Bilateral Tension Pneumothorax Developed during General Anesthesia

Abstract

|
Tension pneumothorax is a rare complication during the general anesthesia. Barotrauma occures when the excessive positive pressure is transmitted to the alveoli. Due to the tension pneuomothorax, lung collapse, cardiac tamponade and circulatory
collapse
are developed. So we must early diagnose the tension pneumothorax and treat it immediately. The pulse oximeter has been recommended as a desirable method of patient monitoring during the general anesthesia.
The 8-year-old female patient was admitted. By using pulse oxymetry, we could early detect bilateral tension pneumothorax and subcutaneous emphysema during the general anesthesia. Closed thoracotomy and drainage was performed promptly for the
correction
of the bilateral tension pneumothorax after the radiologic confirmation. The clinical signs and symptoms of the tension pneumothorax were improved and the patient was discharged without complication.
